In the early morning of November 14, 2019, the safety protocols at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California, were rendered tragically insufficient. Despite being a campus considered fortified against the rising threat of school shootings, a 16-year-old student, Nathaniel Berhow, opened fire with a pistol. In a brutal, 16-second attack, he shot five of his schoolmates, killing two, before turning the gun on himself.

The William S. Hart Union School District had proactively implemented security measures.
