It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Russ Pawlas, beloved band director, educator, and cherished member of the Lynchburg community. Russ passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, passion, and kindness that touched countless lives.
Russ was a fixture in the local education and music community, serving as the band director at Brookville Middle School and as a longtime director at E.C. Glass High School and Altavista Combined School. His influence as an educator and mentor extended beyond the classroom, shaping the lives of many young musicians and fostering a love for music in all who had the privilege of learning under his guidance.
Known for his warm heart and positive demeanor, Russ was often described as “one of the good guys.” His colleagues and former students remember him fondly for his unwavering support and his ability to inspire those around him. Just a month ago, Russ conducted the Campbell County All-County Band, and during that time, he was relaxed, happy, and seemed to be in a great place in life. He had recently become a grandfather, a milestone that filled him with immense joy.

Russ is survived by his family, including his beloved grandchild, and will be deeply missed by his colleagues, students, friends, and all who knew him.
Funeral arrangements are forthcoming. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time and appreciates the support and prayers from the community.
